In celebration of its 20th Anniversary Party, innovative pop culture beacon BUST Magazine commissioned Ahlers Designs to create the first-ever BUST Golden Bra Award. The awards were presented in July 2013 at Brooklyn, New York’s The Bell House to pioneering, feminist journalist-activist Gloria Steinem, actress Amber Tamblyn, rapper Jean Grae, comedian Lizz Winstead, musician Kathleen Hanna, and comedian Margaret Cho. Inspired by the recipients’ boundary-defying careers and avid support of women’s empowerment, Gail designed the award sculpture in the style of a vintage “Madonna” brassiere—humorous, political, and glamorous. The materials speak to Ahlers Designs’ love of environmentally friendly art: the sculptures were cast in reclaimed pewter, layered with gold plate and gold leaf, and mounted on custom bases of recycled lumber. Since 1993, BUST Magazine has served as a leading publication for women’s voices and  “provides an uncensored view on the female experience.”
